Erma Jean Smith, 61, of Grove Hill died May 15, 2009 at Mobile Infirmary Medical Center.
She was born Sept. 15, 1947 in the Zimco community to the parentage of the late Nathan and Annie Zell Smith. She confessed Christ and was baptized at an early age at Mt. Zion #2 Baptist Church in Grove Hill. She was a retired educator.
She was a member of Mt Zion #2 Baptist Church. Her formal education was completed at Wilson Hall High School. She continued her education at Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursery School and Family Life Education, and a Master of Education in Early Childhood Education.
She taught at Tuskegee Institute, DeKalb County School System, Atlanta, GA, at Grove Hill Elementary School, and the University of North Alabama in Florence. She was a member of the National Education Association and the Alabama Education Association. She was a member of Bertha Mae Chapter #314, OES.
She leaves to honor and cherish her memory: one brother, Lawrence (Germaine) Jackson, Fuquay-Varina, NC; one sister, Lillian (Mahesh) Dodda, Hazel Crest, Illinois; other relatives and friends.
The service was May 20 at Mt. Zion #2 Baptist Church at 12 noon, Rev. Cory Pruitt, pastor and eulogist. The Eastern Star Ceremony preceded the service. Burial was in the Magnolia Lawn Cemetery on Hwy 43 North in Grove Hill.
