Joseph Donald Gartman Sr., 82, of Jackson died July 12, 2009 in a Mobile Hospital.
He was born Dec. 24, 1926. He was a member of the Stave Creek Baptist Church in Jackson. He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II.
He was a former "Citizen of the Year" in Jackson and worked part time with Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson. He was a retired self-employed Independent Insurance Agent (Gartman Insurance & Realty) in Jackson. He served on the National Board of Professional Insurance Agents, where he served as a former president.
He was very well known throughout the Clarke and Washington County areas for his work with "Kingdom Builders" which he helped to organize. This organization helped many families and individuals by installing wheelchair ramps, replaced roofs and helped remodel homes for the sick and handicapped with donations from businesses, churches and individuals with volunteer labor of the "Kingdom Builders."
Survivors include his wife, Ernestine Beach Gartman, Jackson; four sons, Joseph D. (Doni) Gartman Jr., Jackson, Greg Palmer, Grand Bay, Tony Palmer, Saraland, "Nape" Coley III, Pensacola, FL; two daughters, Amy S. Gartman, Birmingham, Susie Sentiff, Nashville, TN; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
The service was July 14 at Lathan Funeral Home Chapel in Jackson at noon with Revs. Jamee Lay and Mike Malloy officiating. Burial was in the Sunflower United Methodist Church Cemetery in Sunflower.
