Edward Riley Harrell, 81, of Grove Hill died July 10, 2009 in an area hospital.
He was born Jan. 11, 1928. He was a native of Jackson. He was a lifelong resident of the Antioch Community and a member of the Antioch Baptist Church where he was a deacon emeritus. He retired from the Boy Scouts of America after giving 20 years of service as a camp ranger at the Maubila Scout Reservation. He served as past chief of the Antioch Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #226.
Survivors include his wife, Dottie Rea Purvis Harrell, Grove Hill; one son, Larry Purvis (Carolyn) Harrell, Grove Hill; one daughter in-law, Sharon Brown Harrell, Grove Hill; one sister, Mildred Harrell McIntyre, Jackson; three grandchildren; five greatgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Edward Ronnie Harrell along with six brothers and two sisters.
The service was July 13 at 11 a.m. at Antioch Baptist Church in Grove Hill with Rev. Lon Baxter officiating. Burial was in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. Lathan Funeral Home of Grove Hill directed.
Active pallbearers were Will Harrell, Brandon Nelson, Keith Harrell, Kenny Harrell, Jimmy Lowe and Johnny Purvis.
Honorary pallbearers were Rocky Wolfe, Joe Horton, Harry Harrell, Richard Roberts, Ralph Clayton, Dwight Walker, Maybon Armistead and Rodney Smith, friends and coworkers of the Boy Scouts of America.
