Melva Jean Daugherty, 77, of McIntosh died July 17, 2009 at a local hospital.

She was born July 22, 1931. She was a native of Rockville. She was a member of McIntosh United Methodist Church. She was president of the United Methodist Women for approximately 20 years. She established the McIntosh Public Library and was one of the first women chosen to serve on a jury in Washington County.

Survivors include her husband, Mayor Carrol Daugherty, McIntosh; one son, Cris (Brenda) Daugherty, Spanish Fort; two daughters, Nancy (Ronny) Jarrell, Jeanine (Raymond) Payne, all of McIntosh; two sisters, Stella Ballas, Linden, Louise Daugherty, McIntosh; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Clarice Allen and two brothers, Cecil Allen and Elem "Buffy" Allen.

The service was July 18 at 3 p.m. at McIntosh United Methodist Church with Revs. Molly Fulford, Earl Watson and Tom Leggett officiating. Burial was in the McIntosh Methodist Church Cemetery. An online guest book may be signed at www.lathanfuneralhomes. com. Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directed.

Active pallbearers were Will Payne, Matthew Daugherty, Scott Daugherty, Hunter Payne, Luke Payne and Payton Payne.

Honorary pallbearers were Faye Johnson, Julia Wells, Ruth Blount, Carolyn Rockwell, Sandra Dawson, Sharon Akridge, Angela Murphy, Candy Davidson, Shannon Davidson, Mary Lee Johnson and Jeanette Fields.
