This big loggerhead turtle was photographed crossing Old Highway 84 near the old millpond just west of Grove Hill one day last week. As big as a washtub, the turtle with its jagged shell and monstrous head looks like a prehistoric creature and is just as fierce. A shove with a stick to try and help it get across the road showed he wasn't as slow as one might expect turtles to be. He quickly lashed out with a wide-open mouth and mean-looking teeth. The aggressive resistance prompted the photographer to let the big guy fend for himself. Why did the turtle cross the road? Because he could, apparently. Photos by Jim Cox
