William Jenkins "Dinkey" Gates, 72, of Jackson died Aug. 7, 2009 in a local hospital.

He was born March 14, 1937 in Dickinson. He was a former resident of Prichard for 24 years, Saraland for 28 years, and Silverhill for 11 years. He served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force reserves, graduated from C. F. Vigor High School in 1956, and attended Spring Hill College. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 26 years of service. He loved gospel music, gardening, nature, and University of Alabama football.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Orinell Tucker Gates, Jackson; two sons, Marcus Brent Gates, Derek Tillman Gates, both of Jackson; two sisters, Edwina (Marion) Ezernack, Lucedale, MS, Willodean G. Rodgers Newberry, Hawkinsville, GA; uncle, William Floyd "Mitt" Gates of Thomasville; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Christopher Kevin Gates, and his parents, Mike J. and Essie B. Gates.

The service was Aug. 11 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church in Walker Springs with Rev. William Allison and Bro. Jerry Hollingsworth officiating. His nephew, Kyle Rodgers, was also a speaker. Burial was in Trinity Memorial Gardens in Jackson. Radney Funeral Home of Saraland directed.

Honorary pallbearers were Jerry Hall, Bill Edge, Lem Finney, Tom Bilbo, Doug Clanton, Vance McVay, Larry Mashburn, Larry Gates, Roger Dale Gates, Rayford Gates, Jerry Gates, John Bowers, John Mitchell, Willis Dreading, Charles Reeves, Rev. Graham C. Tucker, Steve Tucker, and Shane Threlkeld.

Active pallbearers were De- Wayne Gates, Randy Gates, Phil Gates, Terry Gates, Ashley Rodgers, Michael Kent Sumrall, and George Hilburn Sumrall, III.
