Pierre Pelham, 80, of Mobile died Dec. 3, 2009.
He was born July 20, 1929 to Judge and Mrs. Joe M. Pelham Jr. He was a native of Chatom. He was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Alabama and cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School. An infantry combat veteran of the Korean War, he held both the Combat Infantryman Badge and Expert Infantryman Badge. From 1966 to 1974, he served two terms in the Alabama State Senate, the second as President Pro Tem. He was a Fellow of Harvard’s Kennedy Institute of Politics and cared intensely about national, state and local political affairs his entire life. An avid hunter, he held a deep appreciation for the natural beauty of the timberland he and his family owned. He was a brilliant man and gifted orator with an extraordinary wit who was fiercely loyal to his family. He was a deeply spiritual man, he was a life-long member of Chatom United Methodist Church which was co-founded by his father, Judge Joe M. Pelham Jr.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Eva Arvidsson Pelham; two sons, Joseph (Chifang) M. Pelham IV, Fredericksburg, VA, Marc (Lisa) Pelham, Mobile, two daughters, Pier (Andrew) Prestidge, Ojai, CA, Patrice Pelham, Oxnard, CA; 12 grandchildren, Sarah Pelham, Palmers Pelham, John Pierre Pelham, Hanna Pelham, Mary Pelham, Lydia Pelham, Eric Pelham, Joseph Pelham, Benjamin Pelham, Luke Prestridge, Patrick Prestridge and Scarlet Schmitz; other relatives and countless friends.
The service was Dec. 8 at 11 a.m. at Chatom United Methodist Church. Burial was in the Chatom Cemetery. Lathan Funeral Home of Chatom directed.
