Deacon Charles L. Johnson, 81, of Mobile died Dec. 6, 2009.
He was born Dec. 18, 1927. He was a native of Gosport. Deacon Johnson worked untiringly on his drywall jobs as well as his callings in the church. He was a retired Drywall Contractor after more than 50 years of service. He was a faithful 50 years plus member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church where he served on the Usher Board, Sunday School member, past chairman of the Deacon Board, a past trustee and was serving as a Deacon-Emeritus.
He enjoyed studying God’s word, spending time with his grandchildren, fishing, hunting and growing fresh vegetables.
Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Ella Golden Johnson, Mobile; one son, Gary (Carmen) Johnson, Atlanta, GA; one daughter, Marilyn Johnson Warner, Mobile; two brothers, Amos (Barbara) Johnson, Eight Mile, Dethroy Johnson, Mobile; four sisters, Eloise Frazier, Mobile, Leanna ( Joseph) Thomas, Akron, OH, Resta B. Kiser, Rosa (James) Maclin, Union City, GA; a loving mother-in-law, Willie Mae Dean Golden, Mobile; seven grandchildren, DeMet, Gary, Aftan, Charles, Tobias, Island Marie and Chances, two brothers-in-law, Theodore (Lucile) Golden, Mobile, Edward (Maxine) Golden, Atlanta, GA; two sisters-in-law, Violet (Albert) Lowery, Mobile, Ollye (James) Davis, Mableton, GA; many nephews, nieces, cousins, other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lem and Willie Mae Hollins Johnson; one brother, Arthur James Johnson and a sister, Claudia Johnson Smothers.
The service was Dec. 11 at 12 noon at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Mobile with Rev. Montgomery Portis Jr., officiating minister. Burial was in the Pine Crest Cemetery in Mobile. Small’s Mortuary, Inc. in Mobile directed.
Active pallbearers were nephews and cousins.
Honorary pallbearers were the Mt. Zion Deacon Board.
Flowerbearers were the Mt. Zion Ushers and Deaconesses.
