Robert "JD" Laton, 89, died Dec. 31, 2009 at the Washington County Hospital in Chatom.
A native and resident of Laton Hill, he was recognized in his community as a retired self-employed water well driller. Prior to this, he worked for the Civil Conservation Corps building roads for national parks such as Cades Cove, the Greater Smokey Mountain Parkway and others. Enlisting in the U.S. Army air forces, he served in England and later was in transit to Japan as World War II ended.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian Grimes Laton, Laton Hill; daughter, Mary Ann (Dean) Thompson, Laton Hill; two sons, Elvin (Janet) Laton, Laton Hill, Leon (Tracy) Laton, Howardtown; brother, Roscoe Laton, Mobile; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
His daughter, Jacqueline Renee Crager, preceded him in death.
The service was Jan. 2 at the Laton Hill Baptist Church in Laton Hill with the Rev. Rob Jackson officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery under the direction of St. Stephens Funeral Home of St. Stephens.
Active pallbearers were Tim Hutcherson, Mark Patrick, Greg Laton, Elvis Hennis, Wayne Crager and Daniel MaHarry.
Honorary pallbearers included Jim Overstreet, Lloyd D. Laton, John Laton Jr., Don Laton and Norman Scarbrough.
