Garey R. Goodwin, 84, of San Mateo, FL went to be with the Lord Saturday, January 9 following an extended illness.

He was born June 9, 1925. Garey was a native of Grove Hill and had been a resident of Putnam County Florida for the past 47 years, living in East Palatka, FL and later living in San Mateo for the past 45 years. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He also served during the occupation of Japan. He was a recipient of the Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was proud to be a Marine. Garey had worked in sales until he retired two years ago. He loved to work with the public. He knew people from all over the area and remembered names, people and their families. He was formerly employed by Culligan, Huntley's Hardware, Smith's Cash & Carry, Scotty's, Artic Air and Hope Depot. He was a faithful attendee of the First Assembly of God in Palatka, FL for 55 years. He grew up in the Assembly of God church. He loved God's people and his friends in the church, and other friends as well. His hobby for many, many years was hunting and also fishing. He loved to garden and loved flowers. He and his wife enjoyed rooting plants and adding them to their collection. He loved college football and baseball and especially followed Florida State University football.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gloria Goodwin of San Mateo; one son, Don Goodwin of Hilton Head, SC; one daughter and sonin law, Debi and Mark Kistler of Tallahassee, FL; one sister, Clarice Gates of Grove Hill; two grandchildren, Tori Kistler and Matt Kistler, both of Tallahassee; his aunt, Kay Smith of Jacksonville, FL; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Garey was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Mattie Goodwin; three brothers and one sister.

The wake will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at the Masters Funeral Home of Palatka, FL. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, January 14, 2010 at the First Assembly of God in Palatka with Pastor Ted Stackpole and Pastor Ben Tippett officiating. In honor and celebration of Garey's life a video tribute will be shown. Burial will follow in the San Mateo Cemetery, San Mateo, FL with military honors bestowed by the United States Marine Corps.
