Sarah Pace Stewart Johnson, 87, of Jackson died Jan. 26, 2010 at a Mobile hospital
She was born March 12, 1922 in Reform. She received an undergraduate and Masters degree from the University of Alabama and a Masters degree from the University of South Alabama. She also attended Lamar University in Beaumont, TX and Tulane University in New Orleans, LA. She was a retired school teacher having taught elementary school in Beaumont and New Orleans and at Jackson High School. She held a Class AA certificate as an Education Specialist. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gama, Clarke County Retired Teachers Association, the Elijah Pugh Chapter of the DAR, having served as Regent, the Pace Society of America, having served on their board of directors, the Three Arts Club and the Jackson Garden Club as well as other organizations. She was an avid gardener and nature lover.
Survivors include her husband, John Perry Johnson, Jackson and Gainestown; two daughters, Sarah Ann Frierson, Mobile, Mary Jane Nelson, MD, Birmingham; two stepdaughters, Jane Ellen Clark, Hybart, Barbara Johnson, Gulf Breeze, FL; one stepson, Perry Johnson, Savannah, GA; three grandchildren, John Richard Frierson, Destin, FL, Mary Stewart Nelson, George Augustus Nelson IV, Birmingham; two great-grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth and Robert William Frierson, Destin, FL.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Burrell Madison Johnson, DVM and Sarah Pace Johnson and her former husband, John Calvin Stewart.
The service was Jan. 30 at 2 p.m. at Lathan Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jim DuFriend officiating. Burial was in the Pine Crest Cemetery in Jackson.
The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to the First United Methodist Church of Jackson or Jackson High School (Sissie’s Garden).
Active pallbearers were John R. Frierson, George A. Nelson IV, Robert C. Phillips, King Cunningham, Darryl Overstreet and Danny Chancey. (2-1tp)
