George Lewis Callier, 83, a native and resident of Grove Hill, died at his home Feb. 19, 2010. He was the fourth of five children born to the late Robert Louis and Lillie Bell Callier. Mr. Callier spent his life serving God in the Orange Hill Missionary Baptist Church as a faithful member of the choir, on the Deacon Board and on the Finance Committee until his health declined.
Mr. Callier was a graduate of the Clarke County Public School System in Grove Hill and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served during World War II (1944-1946) and then honorably discharged. A master carpenter, his work can be found in many homes and facilities throughout Clarke County and the surrounding areas. He was also an avid organic gardener. Mr. Callier was renowned as a man who loved to laugh, was insightful, visionary and a caring patriarch.
Cherishing his memory are his wife, Dorothy Callier of Grove Hill; daughter, Patricia (Billy) Hines of Elizabeth City, N.C.; two sons, Guyon (Norma) Callier of Mobile and Alvin Dwight Callier of Grove Hill; one brother, Washington C. (Clara) Callier of Mobile; sister-in-law, Lizzie Callier of Cleveland, Ohio; grandchildren, Patrick (Aliya) Hines of Ann Arbor, Mich., Tiffany (Ryan) Dawkins of Mobile and Billicia Hines of Elizabeth City; great-grandchildren, Mya Callier and Elijah Hines; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, godchildren and devoted friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers, Fredic D. Callier and Louis H. Callier; and sister, Allie Marie Callier.
Viewing is today, Thursday, Feb. 25 from 11 a.m. until the funeral hour at 12 noon, at Orange Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Grove Hill with the Rev. James Barron, pastor, and the Rev. Marion Pierre, officiating minister. Interment will follow in the Orange Hill Cemetery in Grove Hill.
