Army Command Sgt. Maj. Selton Jim Daffron, 70, died March 9, 2010 at his Lillian residence after lingering illnesses due to his service in Vietnam. Command Sgt. Maj. Daffron and his family were formerly of Jackson.
A highly decorated soldier for meritorious service during two tours of duty in Vietnam, his meritorious achievement awards include the Bronze Star, three Purple Hearts, Vietnam Service Medal with the Bronze Star and Silver Star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal - Korea, Army Commendation Medal, Civil Action Honor Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, and Meritorious Service Award.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Gates Daffron of Lillian; five daughters, Debra Parker of Trinity, N.C., Sharon Daffron of Sanfford, Fla., Marilyn Daffron of Chester, Va., Jennifer Daffron of Fort Walton, Fla., and Emily Daffron of Mobile; two sons, Michael Daffron of Hopewell, Va. and Jonathan Daffron of Decateur; two stepdaughters, Dr. Sherry White of Pensacola and Shlynn Curry of Hazel Green; two sisters, Jewel Holland of Chicago, Ill. and Betty Hallmark of Carbon Hill; eight grandchildren and one step-grandchild.
Full Military Honors were given at his funeral services Thursday, March 11, at the Naval Aviation Memorial Chapel in Pensacola followed by interment in the Barrancas National Cemetery, NAS Pensacola. Services were conducted by the Rev. William Allison of Jackson. Arrangements were directed by Cason Funeral Services in Foley.
