John Robert Mattmuller, 82, a native of Vero Beach, Florida, former resident of Indian River, FL, and a long time resident of Barlow Bend, died March 29, 2010.  He had resided at the William F. Green State Veterans Home for the past three years.
Immediately after graduating from Vero Beach High School, Mr. Mattmuller joined the Navy and served until the end of WWII.  Following the war he attended Florida State College for Women (later to become Florida State University) as one of this university's first male students. He transferred to Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University) where he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and earned a degree in Civil Engineering. Upon graduation he worked with the Florida Department of Transportation and with Palmer and Baker before relocating to Cummings, GA, to work as a civil engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In his long career with the Corps he worked on numerous projects in the southeastern United States, and also in the Middle East. He retired from the Corps in 1984 but later worked with Sverdrup Engineering Company in Amman, Jordan, where he was the construction manager on the U.S. Embassy.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Anne Prim Mattmuller, Barlow Bend; one son, Frank (Maureen) Mattmuller, Brooksville, FL; three daughters, Patsy (Pete) Black, Monroeville, Becky (Bob) Grant, Gulf Shores, Suzy (Greg) Oakes, High Legh, United Kingdom; two brothers, Richard (Donna) Mattmuller, Aurora, OH, Norman (Joan) Mattmuller, Jacksonville, FL; one sister, Marion Marschall, Greensboro, NC; twelve grandchildren, Jonathan Black, Matt Grant, Robert Black, Sam Mattmuller, D. Watson Black, Anne Kimbell Grant, Mallory Mattmuller, Anna Katherine Black, Heather Oakes, Matthew Oakes, J. Ransom Oakes and Jamie Oakes.
Visitation will be at the Gainestown United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 3 from 10 until the 11 a.m. service. Burial will follow immediately. Lathan Funeral Home will direct.
