Johnnie Mae Jordan Matthews of Center Point, AL passed away on Monday morning June 14, 2010 at her daughters’ home in Hoover, AL where she had resided since December 2009. She was 90 years old. Born in Dickinson, AL on January 21, 1920, she was the daughter of Edna Larrimore Bradford and Hubard Bradford and Johnny Jordan of Mobile.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Arcil (C.A.) Matthews who died at a young age of 49, three brothers, H.B. Bradford, Clyde Bradford, both of Grove Hill, AL and Bill Bradford of Pine Hill, AL. Granddaughter Christy Whitehead of Birmingham, AL and great nephew, Benjamin Barnes of Grove Hill, AL.
She lived a very quiet and private life. She enjoyed walking up to three miles a day three to four times a week until several years ago, read her daily Bible reading, watched "Family Fued" everyday, always watched Dawson Memorial Baptist Church on each Sunday. She was a member of Hilldale Baptist Church of Center Point, AL for some 48 years.
Mrs. Matthews is survived by one daughter and two sons, Jane Matthews, Michael (Carol) Matthews, Robert (Kim) Matthews, all of Birmingham, AL. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 12 nieces and nephews, Sister, Martha Ann Shamburger and 2 sister-in-laws, Ella Agnes Bradford of Grove Hill, AL, Mildred Bradford Radcliff of Pine Hill, AL and Tommie Dee Kennedy, aunt of Dickinson, AL and ex-daughter-in-law Carolyn Matthews.
A graveside service will be Thursday, June 17 at 11 a.m. at Magnolia Lawn Cemetery in Grove Hill with her grandson, Jeff Matthews officiating. Lathan Funeral Home of Grove Hill will direct.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Alzheimer’s Society.
