Dr. William Armistead Stallard, PhD., 88, of Lucedale, MS died June 8, 2010 in Mobile.
He was born Sept. 15, 1921 in Grove Hill. Dr. Stallard was a descendant of pioneer families of Clarke County. His ancestor, Capt. William Armistead, a Revolutionary War soldier, came to Clarke County in 1818, from North Carolina. Another ancestor, Isaac Grant, originally from North Carolina, came to Grove Hill, Clarke County in 1855, to publish the newspaper, "The Clarke County Democrat," which still exists today.
He graduated from Clarke County High School in 1938. He entered the University of Alabama, 1938, but had to leave in 1942 to enter the United States Army Air Corps. (U.S. Air Force) during World War II. He became a second lieutenant and served as a navigator in the Pacific Theatre until 1945. In 1946, he joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and in 1947, he also worked for Eastern Airlines in Miami, FL. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Zoology in 1949 and his Master of Science degree in Botany in 1950 from the University of Alabama. He completed his PhD degree in Biochemistry in 1962 from the University of Texas. He was a teacher, assistant principal and supervising principal of Fairhope Public Schools, Dean of the Orlando Junior College and taught science at Clarke County High School, Science Coordinator for the Mobile County Schools, Dean of Manatee Junior College, Bradenton, FL. From 1965-1983, he was the first president of the South Florida Junior College, (South Florida Community College) Avon Park, FL. He taught math and science at George County High School in Lucedale, MS. He did consulting for state and federal governments. He was a past president of the Avon Park Rotary Club, National Science Foundation, National College Accreditation Board, and Junior College Presidents Board of Florida. He was a member of The Orchid Society and South Alabama Bird Club of Mobile. He was a member of the Rocky Creek Baptist Church of Lucedale, MS.
Survivors include his wife, Pat Sheffield Peterson Stallard, daughter, Mary Elizabeth S. (Dr. Donald) Humphrey, Plant City, FL, one son, William Grant Stallard, deceased, ( Joy), Bradenton, FL; stepchildren, Bruce (Carla) Peterson, Pattie P. Heacock (Austie), Laurie P. Breton; grandchildren, Caroline H. (Seth) Masek, Jonathan Humphrey, Stefanie Stallard; stepgrandchildren, Mark Kess, Cody Peterson, Christiana Peterson, Sara Heacock, Briana Breton; great-grandchild, Ethan Masek; half-brother, Dow Stallard, and half-sister, Katherine Stallard Jenks, Franklin, TN.
He is preceded in death by his parents, William Bradley Stallard and Marie Armistead Stallard.
The service was June 11 at Rocky Creek Baptist Church in Lucedale, MS with Rev. Greg Barker of Lucedale, MS officiating. Sigler Funeral Home of Lucedale, MS directed. Burial was June 14 at Bougainvillea Cemetery at Avon Park, FL. The graveside service was provided by Stephenson- Nelson Funeral Home at Avon Park, FL.
