Lula Mae Wortham, 97, of Whatley died July 10, 2010 at Jackson Health Care Facility.
She was born Nov. 24, 1912 to the parentage of the late Henry Jackson and Jannie Moore. She was a native of Grove Hill. She accepted Christ at an early age and united with First Baptist Church, Whatley, where she sang in the choir. Upon moving to Toledo, Ohio, she united with Eastern Star Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. Williams. At Eastern Star she served on the usher board and sang in the choir. She relocated back to Whatley 18 years ago and reunited with First Baptist Church, Whatley. She was a strict, yet kind and loving disciplinarian. She never met a stranger.
She leaves to cherish her memories, a loving daughter, Birdie Mae (James) Rodgers, Whatley; two devoted nieces, Marjorie Pendleton, Annie Pope, Whatley; a step-grandson, James Ballard, Mobile; also a host of nieces and nephews.
The longest survivor of seven children, and in addition to her parents, Mrs. Wortham was preceded in death by her husband, Bud Wortham, two sisters, Louise Johnson, Maggie Rogers and one brother, Willie Dodge.
The service will be Sunday, July 18, 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Whatley with Rev. Fernell Pendleton, pastor and eulogist. Viewing will be from 2 until the 3 p.m. Burial will be in the Whatley Cemetery. Following the burial, the family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of the church. Andrews Funeral Home of Jackson will direct.
