Mary Lee Bumpers Singleton, 87, affectionately known as "Sister", died Sept. 15, 2010 at the Gainesville Health And Rehabilitation Center in Gainesville, Va.
She was born on May 13, 1923 to the late Willie and Emma Pugh Bumpers. She joined the Berry’s Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in the Winn community where she was very active in church activities and was a former member of the Amies Pride Chapter No. 590, Order of Eastern Star. She attended the Berry’s Chapel Elementary School and furthered her studies at the Clarke County Training School in Coffeeville. On Feb. 10, 1945 she was united in marriage to United States Army Sgt. Clarence Singleton of Mobile, who preceded her in death on June 26, 1983.
Survivors include her only child, a daughter, Louvern S. (Guy) Corneille, Gainesville; three grandchildren, Daryl Guy (LaShanda) Corneille, Palmdale, Calif., Gregory Marc (Lyntisha) Corneille, Pasadena, Md., Karen Michelle Corneille, Los Angeles, Calif.; two brothers, Percy Lee (Eula) Bumpers, San Antonio, Texas, Wilmer Bumpers, Mobile; three sisters, Etherine B. Lassiter, Montgomery, Elmira Beal, Baton Rouge, La., Elnora Cox, Compton, Calif.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by three of her brothers.
The service will be Friday, Sept. 24 at Berry’s Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church at 1 p.m. The body will lie in state at the church from 12 noon until the funeral hour. Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directed.
