Lillian Gertrude Knight Knight Duke, 91, died Dec. 16, 2010 at the Duke Hospice Hock Family Pavilion in Durham, NC. She has resided for the past 6 years at Durham Regent Independent Retirement facility in Durham, NC where she lived near her son and his wife.
She was born Jan. 23, 1919 in Thomasville. She was the daughter of the late John Knight and the late Clyde Wilson Knight. She was the first of 12 children and was raised in Clarke County. She worked for 23 years at Vanity Fair in Jackson. She later started a second career as a nurse at Jackson Hospital where she retired after 30+ years. During the years at the hospital she worked in the delivery and operating rooms. She was present at the births of numerous children, many of whom she quietly followed over the years. She loved nursing and helping others.
She had an outgoing personality, loved to make friends and will be missed. She always said that she loved everybody. She was devoted to her family and friends with whom she enjoyed staying in touch through the telephone and The Clarke County Democrat. She was the historian of the family and had a keen recall of people and events which she enjoyed sharing with others. She was a well known cook in the community and an expert in needlework producing many beautiful clothes, quilts and other pieces.
She was a long time member of the Springfield Methodist Protestant Church in Sandflat and enjoyed the many activities of the church and the Sunshine Club. She also attended Sunday services at the chapel in the Durham Regent while living in Durham.
Survivors include one son, Johnny Elvis (Judy Nichols) Knight; three brothers J.C. Knight, Thomasville, Leonard Knight (Catherine), Grove Hill, S.M. (Jewel) Knight, Calhoun, Tenn.; four sisters Prunice Todd, Thomasville, Esther Peel, Leland, Miss., Hilda (Coleman) Knight, Thomasville, Olene (Roy) Hallman, Bay Minette; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Henry "Dink" Knight, her second husband R.A. Duke; her first son, Henry Odel Knight; two brothers W.H. "Dub" Knight, Dorphus Knight; two sisters, Clara "Polly" Knight, Loraine Cave.
The service was Dec. 20 at 11 a.m. at O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home. Burial was at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Jackson.
Pallbearers were, Byron Carlisle, John Gaddis, Jimmy Knight, John Cave, Clint Bagley, and Gary Luker
Memorials may be made to the Springfield Methodist Protestant Church, 3087 Sandflat Road, Thomasville, AL 36784.
The family would like to thank her doctors, Dr. John T. Kihm and Dr. Stewart Jones both of whom Mr. Lillian had the greatest respect. They would also like to thank the staff at the Duke Hospice Hock Family Pavilion for their caring and loving support.
