T. Massey Bedsole, 93, of Mobile died at his home Jan. 1, 2011.
He was a native of Grove Hill, having been born Aug. 1, 1917, He was the son of Judge and Mrs. Travis Jesse Bedsole.
Mr. Bedsole was a 1939 graduate of the University of Alabama and a 1941 graduate of the University of Alabama School of Law.
Ironically, he died as he was getting ready to watch the Alabama-Michigan State bowl game with his family. He had suffered from cancer for about a year.
He was a Navy pilot during World War II, seeing duty in the Pacific Theater. He attained the rank of lieutenant commander.
He moved to Mobile in 1946 and began his law practice with the firm that would become Hand, Arendall, Bedsole, Greaves & Johnston.
He was a trustee of the University of Mobile for almost 40 years and was named its trustees chairman emeritus and made an honorary life trustee. He also spent almost a decade on the board of trustees at the University of Alabama where he was also named a trustee emeritus.
He was active in many business and civic organizations in Mobile and served as chairman of the J. L. Bedsole Charitable Foundation for more than 30 years.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Martha Jones Bedsole of Mobile; a son, Travis Bedsole; a daughter, Curry Bedsole Adams, both of Mobile; and other relatives.
A longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Mobile, a memorial service was held there at noon Tuesday, Jan. 4. A family graveside service followed in the Pine Crest Cemetery that afternoon.
