Annie Gertrude Spencer, 83, a resident of Mt. Vernon, died Jan. 14, 2011. She was a member of the Tates Chapel A.M.E. Church in Coy where she served as superintendent of Sunday School and president of the Women’s Missionary Society. For many years she was an inspiration to many in her church family. A retired educator in Choctaw County, she taught school for 27 years.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years, Curlee Spencer Sr. of Mt. Vernon; one daughter, Anita (Stanley) Harvey of Picayune, Miss.; three sons, Curlee (Christine) Spencer Jr. of Jackson, Henry (Carolyn) Spencer of Mobile and Horace ( Judy) Spencer of Slidell, La.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services will be Sunday, Jan. 23 at Tates Chapel A.M.E. Church. Viewing will be at 12 noon until the funeral hour at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Raymond Mayes, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.
