Lawhon

Mary Elizabeth Holder Lawhon, 95, of Thomasville died Saturday, March 26, 2011.

She was born August 31, 1915 in Grove Hill to the late Grady and Marshall Cunningham Holder. She was affectionately know as "Didgee" by her grandchildren and great grandchildren. In her early years she worked in the Clarke County Probate Judge Office. Several years following she kept study hall at Thomasville High School. Along with her husband, Niles Lawhon, they operated a honey business out of their home. Labeling honey jars and delivering honey to local grocery stores was something she did with pride. On one occasion while delivering a trunk full of honey to a grocery store in Grove Hill she was pulled over by a state trooper. He suspected the car was that of a bootlegger due to the trunk being so low to the ground. Needless to say anyone that knew her can imagine what she said to the trooper and he was apologetic to say the least.

Through the years she and Mr. Lawhon were very charitable with eggs, honey and vegetables. Neither would allow someone in need to go without. After moving to Country Oaks Assisted Living at the age of 89, she continued to enjoy watching Alabama football and would offer a gentle reminder of the time and channel so they would not miss it. She was quite the character and still had the spunk that everyone knew and expected up until the end.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Niles (Jimmy) Gunn of Thomasville; three grandchildren, Jay (Vicky) Gunn of Summerdale, Meg Gunn (Tim) Raley and Ryan Gunn both of Thomasville; eight great-grandchildren, Chandler Caldwell, Laura Beth Caldwell, Kelley Gunn, Alexis Gunn, Grady Gunn, Taylor Gunn, Olivia Gunn and Mary Katherine Gunn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Niles "N.B" Lawhon.

A graveside service was Monday, March 28 at 10 a.m. at Choctaw Corner Cemetery with Rev. Patrick Madden and Rev. J. D. Barnes officiating.

Pallbearers were grandsons, great grandsons, Billy Robison, David Gaston, Bruce Phillips and Chip Pharr.

Honorary pallbearers were the staff of Country Oaks Assisted Living.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to the Shriner's Hospital for Children, 3100 Samford Avenue, Shreveport, LA 71103.
