Slayton funeral is Tuesday


Charles Edward “Eddie” Slayton, 64, of Grove Hill, died April 21 at his home. He was born November 24, 1946, to the late Milton Leon Slayton and Ruth Slayton Yerby in Selma, AL.


He was a 1966 graduate of Jackson High School. He served in Vietnam in the 3rd Marines, 1967-69.


In 1973, he went to work with the Clarke County Sheriff’s Department. In 1975 Eddie was hired as a State Trooper with the Alabama Department of Public Safety. He retired as corporal in 1998. He then worked as investigator for the Gilmore Law Firm for 10 years, retiring from that job in 2008. He was also retired from the Alabama Army National Guard.


Slayton served on the Clarke County Board of Education 1984-1996, representing the Grove Hill district. He was a member of the Grove Hill Lions Club. He served on the board of The Children’s Center of Clarke County since 1999 and was chairman 2002-2005. Eddie was also on the committee that initiated the Regional Child Advocacy Center; he has served as a member of its Board of Directors since its inception. In 2005 he was honored as Grove Hill’s Citizen of the Year. Eddie was a member of The Cornerstone Baptist Church in Grove Hill, AL.


Eddie is survived by his wife of 36 years, Linda Lindsey Slayton, and four sons and their families: Carey and Cara Slayton, Samantha, Dacey and Bailey of Jackson; Scott and Beth Slayton, Hannah and Sarah Kate of Chelsea; Andy Slayton of Grove Hill; and Mark and Lisa Harig, Jessica, Delane, Kayla, and Robert of Crandall, Texas, and one great-grandson, Tristan Harig. He is also survived by his sister and her husband, Janice Slayton Douglas and Perry Douglas of Olive Branch, Mississippi.


Visitation will be from 6:00-9:00 PM at Lathan Funeral Home in Grove Hill on Monday, April 25. The funeral will be at 2:00 PM at Lathan Funeral Home in Grove Hill on Tuesday, April 26, and interment in the Grove Hill-Mathews Cemetery.
