James Edward McGhee Sr., 76, died Aug. 12, 2011 at his residence.
He was born July 18, 1935 in Salitpa to the late Martha and Willie McGhee. He was a deacon and a faithful member at the Church of the Living God in Coffeeville. A hard worker and great provider for his family and contributor to the community he had been an entrepreneur and a roofing contractor. Currently, he was employed by the Clarke County Board of Education as a bus driver.
He married the late Frances Brown and the couple had four children. Following her death, he united with Hattie Chapman.
Survivors include devoted wife, Hattie Chapman McGhee; eight children, Flora Johnson, Salitpa, Cedric (Trudy) McGhee, Tacoma, Wash., Fred (Salorina) McGhee, Jackson, James (Nina) McGhee Jr., Heidelberg, Miss., Richmond Portis, Erwin Portis, Timothy Chapman, all of Jackson, Shamilla Chapman, Birmingham; siblings, Ruby Jackson, Detroit, Mich., Jerry McGhee, Silas, Clarence McGhee, Salitpa; special children, Renaldo (Sambo) Scott, Mobile and Takita (Snoop) Hale, Silas; 24 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
The service was Aug. 15 at the Church of the Living God with Elder Robert Smith, pastor, and James E. McGhee Jr. officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers were his nephews. Honorary pallbearers included Cedric McGhee, Fred McGhee, James McGhee Jr., Richmond Portis, Erwin Portis and Timothy Chapman.
