Bush

James Emory "Pete" Bush, 77, died Dec. 31, 2011 at The Cedars after a brief illness. During the days preceding his death he was surrounded by his family and numerous friends.
He was born Feb. 23, 1934 in Gosport, the son of Herbert Whitfield Bush and Alpha Holliman Bush. He grew up on the family farm and after graduation from Clarke County High School he attended Auburn University. He married Mary Janice Dees of Monroeville and they raised their family in Gosport. During this time, he was a member of the Alabama National Guard and was honorably discharged on Jan. 6, 1958. After 17 years of marriage he and Janice divorced and he was later married to Ruth Herron Nicholson for a number of years. He farmed in Clarke County for over 30 years and then moved to Monroeville. In addition to providing care and support to his widowed mother, he owned and operated Pete Bush Honda for a while and later on opened Monroe Sharpening, which continued in business until shortly before he died. While conducting his business at Monroe Sharpening, he developed skills as a woodworker, going on to create many pieces of fine furniture and several wooden boats. Throughout his life he enjoyed hunting, fishing and shooting. While Pete was a man who was big in stature, he was larger than life in personality. He never met a stranger. Many people in the South are known for their ability to tell a good story but Pete was among the best. He could describe a common occurrence and his listeners would be spellbound. His sense of humor could always carry the day and it is no surprise that it continued until his death. He was most proud of his daughters and their beautiful families.
Survivors include Dr. Janice Karen Bush (Dr. Eric) Hagestad, Princeton, New Jersey, Dotsy Bush (Dr. Larry) Compton, Monroeville; along with grandchildren, James Loxley Compton, Margaret Alpha Compton and Katherine Bush Hagestad and his great-grandchildren and namesake, Emory Reid Compton.
Survivors also include his brother, Preston Randolph Bush II, Orange Beach, nephew, Preston Randolph Bush III, nieces Irma Bush Robinson, Anne Temple Bush and Marie Bush Harrington, as well as sister-in-law, Doris Dees Haynes and cousin, Richard Carroll.
Visitation will be Tuesday, Jan. 3 from 6 until 8 p.m. at the home of Dotsy and Larry Compton. A memorial service will be in Gosport on Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 10 a.m. at the Gosport Methodist Church.
