Willie Earl Pernell was born April 2, 1923 in Mount Olive, Miss., to Lottie and Joe McInnis. Mrs. Pernell passed away May 3, 2012. She and her husband were members of Mount Olive No. 2 Baptist Church in Jackson.
She worked at Harper High School, caring for many children, Joy Cleaners, and early in their marriage, she and her husband owned a café.
“Mrs. Willie” was known for her generosity, loving nature, tireless energy, great cooking and zest for life. She loved her family, traveling, exercise, her flowers, puppies and many friends.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 64 years, Tommie Pernell of Jackson; daughter, Gwen Pernell of Birmingham; step-daughter, Rose (Eugene) Haynes of Jackson; like a daughter, Charlotte (Michael) Jackson Moore of Jackson; two brothers in-law, Mack (Eloise) Pernell of Jackson and Dr. Eugene (Yvonne) Pernell of East Lansing, Mich.; two sisters in-law, Margaret Pernell and Catherine Pernell Pruitt, both of Jackson; two grandsons, Keenan Haynes of Jackson and Xavier Haynes of Central Islip, N.Y.; devoted nephew, the Rev. Douglas Pernell of Jackson; devoted niece, Dr. Joycelyn Pernell- Henderson of Milwaukee, Wisc.; 10 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were May 7 at Mount Olive No. 2 Baptist Church with the Rev. Stevenson Tullis, pastor, and the Rev. Douglas Pernell officiating. Interment was May 8 in the St. Paul Baptist Church Cemetery in Mount Olive under the direction of Jackson Memorial Funeral Home in Jackson.
Pallbearers were her nephews and flower bearers were her nieces.
