Margaret Richardson Thames, our beloved “Big Mom,” 99, of Frankville died July 20, 2012.
She was born Aug. 23, 1912. She was a member of the Bethel Methodist Church. She was a graduate of Washington County High School Class of 1933 where she was on the first Women’s Championship Basketball Team, she played basketball for the Birmingham Women’s Basketball team who opened for the Boston Celtics in 1934 and was voted MVP, and was Grand Marshal of Washington County High School Homecoming 2010. She was retired as a secretary with the United States Debtors Court.
Survivors include one son, Roy (Susan) Thames Jr., Tampa, Fla.; two daughters, Wanda Braun, Frankville, Joan (Dan) Nolen, Atlanta, Georgia; one brother, Billy (Annie Bell) Richardson, Seaboard; one sister-in-law, Carrie Ella Richardson, Citronelle; 11 grandchildren, Courtney (Rick) Shelby, Branon (Michelle) Thames, Adam (Alicia) Thames, Steven (KyeHee) Taylor, Jennifer (Darryl) Brown, Aimee Palmer, Matthew Braun, Jonathan Braun, Evan Braun, Maggie Nolen and Nicholas Nolen; 11 great-grandchildren; special caregivers, Marilyn Dempsey, Susan Moss.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Thames Sr.
The service was July 23 at 11 a.m. at Lathan Funeral Home in Chatom with Revs. John Stone and Leon Harris officiating. Burial was in the Richardson Cemetery in Chatom.
Active pallbearers were Matthew Braun, Evan Braun, Adam Thames, Branon Thames, Nicholas Nolen, Dan Nolen III and Darryl Brown.
