Ruthie Mae Kemp Pritchett, a native of Alma and a resident of the Walker Springs community of Jackson, was born Sept. 11, 1929, the daughter of Mrs. Ludie and Mr. Clausell Kemp Sr. She passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013.
Mrs. Pritchett attended public school in Alma. She confessed Christ at an early age and joined Antioch African Methodist Episcopal Church of Alma. On Sept. 25, 1945, she united in the Holy Bonds of Matrimony to the late Rollie Pritchett Sr., her husband of 47 years. To this union 17 children were born.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four children, Richard Pritchett, Sgt. Elisha Pritchett, Clarence Earl Pritchett and Willie Ray Pritchett; one sister, eight brothers and one grandchild, Asie Lashawn Washington.
Left to cherish her loving memories are six daughters, Helen (Bennie Sr.) Council of Choctaw Bluff, Viola (Ray Sr.) Smith of Mobile, Valerie (Leonard Jr.) Jackson of Grove Hill, Velma P. Leggett, Sadie P. Harris and Katherine (Gary) Pugh, all of Walker Springs; seven sons, Rawleigh (Marie) Pritchett Jr., Clausell (Peggy) Pritchett Sr., Wayman (Gladys) Pritchett, Calvin (Susie) Pritchett Sr., McAuther Pritchett, Kenneth Pritchett and Asie (Terette Washington) Pritchett, all of Walker Springs; sister, Daisy Hunt of Alma; brother, Bobby (Hester) Kemp of Mobile; two sisters-in-law, Jessie Kemp of Alma and Irene Kemp of Mobile; brother-inlaw, Frank Williams of Alma; and one aunt, Mary Kemp of Mobile.
She will also be cherished in the hearts of 49 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren; two devoted nieces, Mary L. Bryant and Lurene B. Russell; a special cousin, Lucy A. Phillips; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Services were Wednesday, Feb. 27, at the Greater Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Walker Springs, with Rev. Mulvoy Taylor Jr., pastor, as eulogist. Burial was in the Hotel Hill Cemetery in Walker Springs under the direction of Andrews Funeral Home in Jackson. Mrs. Pritchett’s sons served as pallbearers and her granddaughters served as flower bearers.
