Deacon James Fendley “Bugg” Mitchell, age 75, a native and resident of Jackson departed this life Friday, March 8, 2013 at a Thomasville nursing facility. He was born to the parentage of the late Fendley Mitchell and Annie Boykin Mitchell.
“Bugg” as he was affectionately called, was a member of New Saint Matthew Baptist Church in the Lilly Valley Community where he served on the deacon board, worked in the Sunday School, and was instrumental in the implementation of several ministries. He was also a member of the American Legion, National Chapter.
He received his B.A. Degree in Business Administration from Alabama A&M University where he was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. He served in the United States Army where he received an honorable discharge. He was the first black person to be hired at Allied Paper Company, presently Boise. He retired after 31 years of employment as a storeroom clerk.
Survivors include his wife of 44 and ½ years, Johnnie Pearl Clarke Mitchell, Jackson; a son, Marcus (Michelle) Mitchell, Woodbridge, VA; five grandchildren, two greatgrandchildren; one brother; Eugene (Audrey) Mitchell, Mobile; two sisters, Minnie Lou (Rev. Albert) Ridgeway, Jackson, Bessie Ann (David) McBride, Thomasville; devoted aunt, Wilcy Boykin, Jackson; devoted brothers-inlaw, Isadore (Margaret) Clarke, Mobile, Larry (Fanita) Clarke, Daphne; devoted sister-inlaw, Joli (Major) King, Lake Elsinore, CA; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Dereck Jarmaine Mitchell, three brothers and two sisters.
Viewing will be Friday, March 15 from 12-6 p.m. at Andrews Funeral Home; viewing will also be Saturday from 10-11 a.m. with the service at New Saint Matthew Baptist Church, Jackson; Rev.
