Rev. Haywood Roper Jr., 79, died March 23, 2013 at Providence Hospital in Mobile.

He was born December 30, 1933 to the parentage of the late Haywood Roper, Sr. and Agnes Todd in the Toddtown Community of Grove Hill. His soul winged its flight from this world of sin, sorrow and pain to a place of eternal rest.

He confessed Christ at an early age and joined Pine Chapel Baptist Church #2 in Toddtown and was baptized by Reverend Talley. He graduated from Wilson Hall High School where his favorite subject was mathematics. Haywood was united in Holy Matrimony to Bernice Stewart in 1954 and to this union three daughters were born. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was employed by International Paper Company in Mobile where he retired after 39 ½ years. He pastored Sand Hill and Chalk Level A.M.E. Zion Churches in Marengo County, AL.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rev. Bernice Roper, and two siblings, Nathan Roper and Anna Mae Law.

Survivors include four daughters, Shernavian Vandiber, Tamyko (Reverend Derrill) Wilson, Sherneice Roper, all of Birmingham, Sonya (Robert) White, Grove Hill; three grandchildren, Sondraiena (Chad) Smith, Tonikos (Dionne) Vandiber, Shantiese Vandiber-Jones, all of Birmingham; a god-child, Fontella Synergy, Birmingham; four great-grandchildren; Kennedy Richardson, Chase Smith, Brooke Vandiber, and Keritan Jones, all of Birmingham; two sisters, Willodean Alston and Hazel Stewart, both of Jackson; two brothers-in-law, Archie (Virgie) Stewart, Jackson, John (Delores) Stewart of Jersey City, NJ; four sisters-in-law, Sarah Roper, Pearlie Jackson, Hazel Hayes and Jessie Stewart, all of Jackson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Services were held Saturday, March 30 at 11 a.m. from the Springfield AME Zion Church in Salitpa. Burial was in the Good Hope Church Cemetery. Condolences to the family at www.viewobit.com. Services with sympathetic care and legendary professionalism entrusted to Andrews Funeral Home. Jackson, AL.
