She accepted Christ at an early age at Cedar Point Baptist Church, Coffeeville, AL. Mrs. Cushion was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Shirley Ann Holland, two brothers, Tommie and Amos York, and two sons, Nathaniel and Jerry Dunigan.
Cora lived a fulfilling life and served in different areas including, but not limited to being a Red Cross volunteer. In the political arena, Cora was active in the Alabama Democratic Conference, NAACP and most importantly, her church.
Throughout her lifetime, she was employed at Jackson Hospital (currently Jackson Medical Center); Allied Paper Mill (currently Boise), and Wal-Mart SuperCenter in Jackson. The organizations she served in and her various employments were such that she became acquainted with many people, and she never met a stranger. She was also affiliated with the Order of the Eastern Star.
Cora was always willing to help, lend advice, and enjoy conversation; and if it something within the conversation hurt your feelings, she would say, “baby, you know I love you, but it’s right”. She’d also say, “It’s the Word”...and then smile. She will be missed by many.
She leaves to cherish her memories, a very faithful, loving and devoted husband of 52 years, Hython “Sugar” Cushion; five children; Shelia Stewart, Rosa Mary Cushion- Powe, Lisa (Merlin) Pernell and Jennifer Cushion, all of Salitpa; Benjamin (Cindy) Cushion of McIntosh, AL; nine grandchildren, Veronica S. (Anthony) Pugh; Patrick Viverette; Tremaine Stewart, Torrian Cushion, Courtney & Daniel Cushion, T’Keiyah Powe, Melisa and Merkyndall Pernell; five great grandchildren; DeAsia Viverett, Aikiyren Pugh, Issaac Viverett, Verkiyan Pugh and Bralein Cushion; also cherishing her memories are two sisters, Mary Ann Weathersby and Gwin (Al) Jarvis; two sisters-in-law, Jeanette Walker and Lallie Beckham, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
