John Chapman Cowden, 69, died April 22, 2013 at Forsyth Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 16, 1943 in Jefferson County to Ralph Thomas Cowden and Ouida Chapman Cowden. He grew up in Grove Hill where he learned to love all outdoor activities. He was employed by the Winston-Salem Police Dept. from 1967-1979. Later he went to work for the North Carolina Department of Corrections and retired in 2009 as Chief of Stokes County Probation Parole. He was an exceedingly avid salt water fisherman and hunter. He was a loving father and grandfather and an extremely loyal friend.
Survivors include his children, Nelson (Christi) Cowden, Yadkinville, Katie Cowden, Queens, N.Y. as well as grandchildren, Ivy Cowden and Benjamin Cowden.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Tom Cowden.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 25 at 3 p.m. at Hayworth- Miller Silas Creek Chapel in Winston-Salem, N.C. with Rev. Dr. Joe Collins officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service.
