Richard Lanier “Dickie” Duke, 62, of Palatka died April 27, 2013 at Putnam Community Medical Center.

He was a native of Grove Hill and has resided in Palatka since 1981 coming from Hattiesburg, Miss. He was a 1969 graduate of Clarke County High School where he was class president and quarterback of the football team. He worked as a commercial contractor, having owned and operated American Construction. He had also worked with Riverside Builders in Palatka. He had been active in the Kiwanis in years past. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, traveling out west and watching western movies. He attended the University of Alabama and was an avid fan of their football team. He will be dearly remembered as a loving dad and devoted grandfather (Pop-Pop).

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Vicki Duke, Palatka, a son, Zachary (Christina) Duke, Palatka; a daughter-in-law, Denise, David (Rachel) Cone, Tallahassee who was like a son to him; four brothers, Donald (Rachel) Duke, Gosport, Marion Duke, Chickasaw, Dwight (Lorraine) Duke, Quitman, MS; Frank Duke, Birmingham; two sisters, Dean (Jim) Owens, Satsuma; Kay (Adrian) Boutwell, Murphy, N.C.; two sisters-in-law, Brenda (Roy) Schell, Tina (Howard) Burkhart; a grandson, Truett West Duke; numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins and his 1969 Clarke County High School Classmates.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Zeddie Duke and Lillian Weaver Duke and his son, Ashley Duke.

Memorial services celebrating Richard’s life will be Saturday, May 4 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Palatka with Revs. Eddie Parcher and Ricky Lindsey officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday, at the church from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Richard’s memory to the First Baptist Church, (College and Career Dept.), 501 Oak St., Palatka, FL 32177, the Humane Society of Northeast Florida, P.O. Box 188, Hollister, FL 32147 or to a charity of choice.
