Fire reported at LP mill
Area fire departments were called to the Louisiana Pacific oriented strand board mill just south of Thomasville Saturday morning, reportedly for a fire. We do not know what kind of fire or to what extend. Local police had the road going into the mill site closed at Highway 43. A reporter at the scene said no smoke could be seen coming from the direction of the mill.
The plant employing approximately 135 workers had just resumed operations in April after being closed since 2008. The plant had opened earlier in 2008 but an explosion shuttered it a few months later. Then the economy turned sour and the housing market fell apart and a decision was made to close the plant until things improved.
The announcement was made last November to reopen the mill and workers have been busy since then ramping up the facility for production.
MORE NEWS: One report is that the fire is in a bin of wood or wood chips and is contained. Fire department are there as a precaution.
