Reed

Mrs. Mary Louise Weaver Reed, a longtime resident of McIntosh, AL, departed this life Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at the age of 81. She was born on July 6, 1932 to the late Martin and Lillie Bell Ridgeway Weaver. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Wilmer Reed, beloved sister, Gladys Lucille Weaver and two brothers, Timothy Weaver and James Weaver.

After graduating from St Peter’s High School, she remained a faithful member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church until her health declined. In addition to her tireless service on many committees, she was also a member of the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary, St. Benedict de Moor, Court #2 for over 36 years and the St. Katherine Drexel Society, Pritchard Chapter.

She touched many lives over two very fulfilling careers. She had a true love for nursing, a career she started after graduating from Good Samaritan Hospital School of Practical Nursing in Selma, AL. She began her nursing career at Jackson Hospital, becoming one of the first African American nurses to be employed there.

To fulfill a desire to spend more time with her family, she began a 26 year career with Mutual Savings Life Insurance Company, from which she retired as District Manager; her district covered Washington and Clarke counties and parts of Mobile county.

Through her career and community involvement, she became well known and loved across this region, where she was an advocate for social justice and a true change agent.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories and her legacy, four devoted children, Dr. Willie M. Reed (Dorothy), West Lafayette, IN; Phyllis Bettis (Perry), McIntosh, AL; Sharlene Evans (Adrian), Jacksonville, FL; Lillian Diane Williams (Fabian), Frisco, TX; loving grandchildren, Tamika Bettis-Curtis (Brian), McIntosh, AL; Kimberly Reed Copeland (Clinton), Arlington, VA; Shavonda Bettis, McIntosh, AL; Brandon Reed, Houston, TX, Taylor Williams, Reed Williams, Kennedy Williams, Campbell Williams, all of Frisco TX; Adrian Evans II, Baltimore, MD; great grandchildren, Christian, Cameron, Tamia, Carley, and Noah. She also leaves to mourn her loss two brothers, Robert Weaver, McIntosh, AL and Roland Weaver, Mobile, AL; sister-in-law, Rosaline Weaver, Butler, AL; devoted aunt, Sarah Roper, Toddtown, AL, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, one devoted, Tanya Williams, Calvert, AL and many other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, July 16, 11 a.m. at St. Peter The Apostle Catholic Church, Chastang, AL; with Father Andrew Toyinbo, Celebrant. Viewing was from 9-11am. Pallbearers were Perry Bettis, Brian Curtis, Adrian Evans, Fabian Williams, Brandon Reed, and Reed Williams. Burial was in Reed Chapel Cemetery, McIntosh, Al. Services entrusted to Andrews Funeral Home, Jackson, AL.
