Merle Lewis Carleton, 89, of Birmingham died Oct. 20, 2013.
She was born in Sweet Water. On Aug. 28, 1924 she met her husband, Roy, while working for Auburn University. After graduation, the newlyweds settled in Birmingham until they moved the family to Grove Hill. Upon her husband’s death in 1996, she returned to Birmingham, joined Highlands United Methodist Church and became a president of St. Martin’s in the Pines. Her life was devoted to caring for her family and her heart went out to every child she met.
Survivors include one son, Mark W. (Nancy) Carleton, Monroeville; three daughters, Lynn Carleton (Bill) Hariston, Birmingham, Sharon Carleton (Gus) Boone, Montreat, N.C., LuAnne Carleton (Wyatt) Wilson, Trussville; two grandchildren, Warren Lewis Carleton, Auburn, Mary Elizabeth Wilson, Trussville; two sisters, Elma Lewis Moore, Montgomery, Elsie Lewis Clements, Monroe, N.C.; one sister-in-law, Jeanette Carleton Mathews, Birmingham; and many nephews, nieces and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Roy Carleton; an infant son; parents, Leo Dove Lewis and Vera Agee Lewis; four brothers, Milton Leo Lewis, Clifford Agee Lewis, William Buford Lewis and James Lamar Lewis; two sisters, Doris Lewis Isler and Clara Mae Lewis Spence.
A graveside service was Oct. 23 at Paynes chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Sweet Water with Rev. Robert A. Boone Jr., her son-in-law, officiating.
