Lucinda Jewel “Doll” Daffin Gavin, 73, of Houston, Texas died Oct. 30, 2013 at her brother’s home surrounding by loving family.

She was born March 11, 1939 to Mamie Pogue Daffin and Johnson Louis Daffin Sr. As a student of Wilson Hall High School in Grove Hill she excelled academically and was known for her melodious, soprano voice. She later attended Alabama State College branch in Mobile. For many years she was employed by the Mobile County School System. She was baptized in the Orange Hill Missionary Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir, assisted in Vacation Bible School, managed the church kitchen and always wanted to ensure plenty of food for serving guests on special days.

Survivors include three sons, Roderick Portis, Kenneth Portis, Karl Portis; her adopted children, Altaso Gavin and LaTosha Gavin; grandchildren and greatgrandchildren; one sister, Clara Mae Daffin Callier; brothers, M. Samuel (Mary Adell Burden) Daffin and Carver Daniel (Mary Jo) Daffin, both of Houston; sistersin law, Jewel Daffin of Houston and Betty Daffin Rezendas of Mobile; the entire James Gavin family; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family; Eva M. Phillips, the Gildersleeve family, Veronia Hill, Roy Hamilton and many more friends too numerous to mention by name.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Johnson Louis Daffin Jr., Elbridge Eans Daffin, Fred Louis Daffin and Zack Pogue Daffin, four sisters, Lillian Daffin Chapman, Elma Daffin, Juanita Daffin and Mary Lou Daffin.

The funeral service will be Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m., at the Orange Hill Missionary Baptist Church with Revs. James H. Barren Sr., pastor, and Brian Chapman, officiating minister. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Robert Callier, Michael Daffin, Kendrick Dixon, Altaso Gavin, Leonard DeVon Gildersleeve, Montraze Slater, Doremus Wallace and Mark White.

Honorary pallbearers include LaBarron Burden, La- Vann C. Callier, Washington E. Callier, Brian Cormier, Courtney A. Daffin, M. Samuel Daffin II, Stephon Daffin, Zack Daffin, Chrissie Foster, Dr. James Gavin, Bishop Roderick Johnson, Kenneth Portis, Karl Portis and Roderick Portis.

Flower bearers will include the Burden sisters and Ms. Gavin’s nieces.

Jackson Memorial Funeral Home will direct.
