On Feb. 9, 1939, a precious daughter was born to the parentage of the late Neal Whittaker and Iola Hunt Whittaker. They named her Carrie Lee. On Jan. 7, 2014, the Lord sent His angel to reclaim Carrie Lee as His own. She was 74 years old.
“Big Momma” as she was lovingly called, was a member of Antioch AME Church of Gainestown. She was united in holy matrimony to McNeal Washington, and this union was blessed with 15 children.
She leaves to cherish her memory, a devoted and loving family, husband, Mc- Neal Washington; 13 children, Thelma (Eligha) Washington, Anita (Robert) Washington, Ernest (Lurvene) Washington, Authur (VanLee) Washington, Lendon (Sarah Ann) Washington, Martin Luther (Earnestine) Washington, Vicki Washington, Victoria ( Jerome) Washington, Carrie Washington, Terrette Washington (Asie) Pritchett, Mildred (Tracy) Williams, Wendy (Stacy) Washington, and Marsha Washington, all of Gainestown; a god daughter, Patricia Hill; four brothers, Robert (Gwendolyn) Whittaker, Saraland, Lester Whittaker, Birmingham, Dwight Whittaker, Frankie Whittaker, Cleveland, Ohio; three sisters, Ida B. Washington, Gainestown, Marine Washington, Mobile, Evie Whittaker, Birmingham; five sisters-in-law, Frances Hunt, Doris Whittaker, Ira Lee Hunt, Jennie Lee Fox, Sarah Lee Williams; 52 grandchildren; five of which she raised as her own, Rager, Lawrence, Nita, Kayla and JT; 36 greatgrandchildren; a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two children, a daughter, Mary Jane and a son, McNeal Jr., three brothers, Elvin Whittaker, Evans Whittaker and Johnnie Whittaker, two grandsons, Asie Washington and Pierre Washington.
The service was Jan. 11 at 1 p.m. at Jackson High School Auditorium with Rev. Amos Smith officiating. Burial was in the Antioch AME Cemetery in Gainestown.
