Andrew Jackson Mitchell Sr., 85, of Jackson departed this life Sept. 23, 2016 at Mobile Infirmary Medical Center.

He was born March 2, 1931 to the parentage of the late Ben Mitchell and the late Rosie Mitchell. He was a native of Atmore. He was a member of the Star of Zion AME Zion Church of Jackson where he served faithfully as a steward, trustee and church musician until his health failed. He retired as a driver with G&H Cement Company and later retired after 38 years of service with the Clarke County Sheriff’s Department. He was named as the honorary “Mayor of the Depot” by the Depot Reunion Committee. He was united in holy matrimony to Mary Earlean Atchison and to this union one son, the late Andrew Jackson “Skeeter Junior” Mitchell was born.

Survivors include his devoted wife, Mrs. Mary Atchison Mitchell, Jackson; one brother, Homer “Bud” Mitchell, Butler; four grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents and son, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Willie Mae Dread, Ester Mitchell, Willianise Craft and four brothers, James, Melvin, Lloyd and Herman Mitchell.

Viewing will be Thursday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Andrews Funeral Home. A second viewing will be Friday, Sept. 30 at 12 noon until the 1 p.m. service at the Star of Zion AME Zion Church at 714 Depot Road in Jackson with Rev. Carrie Ervin as pastor and eulogist. Following burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, the family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of the church.
