Joan Hawkins Pugh, 73, a native and resident of Grove Hill, answered the Master’s call Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017 at Mobile Infirmary Hospital.

 She was born April 19, 1943, the daughter of Rosie and Willie Hawkins. Joan was a member of the Wilson Hall High School Class of 1961. A devoted and faithful member of Pine Chapel No. 1 Baptist Church in Grove Hill, she served in many different capacities, including church clerk for more than 20 years, choir president, Sunday School teacher and youth director of the John T. Memorial Choir. Joan loved singing, cooking, sewing and spending time with family. She was the family advisor and specialized in her home remedies. She will be greatly missed by family, friends, church family and all who knew her.

She leaves to cherish her memories her loving and devoted family, son, Sherman (Lisa) Hawkins, Frisco City; daughter, Irma Pugh, Grove Hill; five grandchildren, Lanesa (Casey) Pugh, Stephanie Pugh, Brandon (Jenni) Pugh and Brian and Thomas Hawkins; one great-grandchild, Kaden “Tot” Dyess; godson, David (Shirley) Baker; two devoted sisters, Vera (Dwight Sr.) Chapman and Deborah Caldwell, both of Grove Hill; four brothers, Freddie (Mattie) Hawkins of Cleveland, Miss., Melvin (Lola) Washington, Detroit, Mich., Clint (Joyce) Hawkins, Gosport, John (Diane) Creighton of Mt. Vernon; sister-in-law, Mattie (Jessie) Henry, Jackson; brother-in-law, Charlie Pugh, Mobile; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including a devoted friend, Stanley Patrick of Grove Hill and special friends, Annie Pearl Welch, Mary Golthy and Eunice Chapman.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Tom Pugh, sister Janice Rivers and and a brother Neal Washington.

Public viewing will be Friday, Feb. 3. The family will receive friends from 4:30 until 6:30 p.m. at Jackson Memorial Funeral Home at 203 East Ross St. in Jackson. Viewing on Saturday, Feb. 4, will be from 11 a.m. until the homegoing celebration at 12-noon at Mt. Zion No. 2 Baptist Church at 2930 Mt. Zion Road in Grove Hill with Rev. Willie Jackson as pastor and Rev. Tommie Lee Chapman, pastor of Pine Chapel No. 1, as the officiating minister. Interment will follow in the Pine Chapel No. 1 Cemetery.
