Courington

Allen Courington, 78, passed away Friday, March 10, 2017 at NHC Place Sumner in Gallatin, Tenn. from complications attributed to Parkinson’s Disease.

He was born Oct. 25, 1938 in Jefferson County to Bruce Sr. and Della Courington. He served in the Signals Corps of the 101st Airborne Division at bases in France and Germany during the late 1950s. After discharge he moved to Clarke County where his parents had moved. He met his future wife there and made his home there as well.

He worked for many decades as an engineer at the plant in Pine Hill, first for MacMillan Bloedel and later for Weyerhauser. He spent two years during the early 1980s in Birmingham working on designs for the expansion of the mill.

A lifelong fitness enthusiast, he completed several marathons during his time in Birmingham. He was still doing push-ups and calisthenics every morning until his health began declining in 2014. He was an avid Alabama supporter and could be just as passionate about a women’s softball win as a football victory.

He served many years on the board and as chairman of the Mid Clarke Water System. He went to a board meeting with a request for a fire hydrant near his home with the aim of lowering his insurance rates. He was elected to membership on the board in short order but never did get his hydrant.

Visitation will be Monday, March 13 from 5 until 7 p.m. A graveside service will be Tuesday, March 14 at 10 a.m. at Union Baptist Church in Grove Hill with Rev. Mike Pearson officiating.

Survivors include his son, Christopher and his wife, Shelley; his son, Corey and his wife, LaTisha and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of almost 50 years, Virginia (Kinman) Courington in 2010.
