John William Chapman, 91, passed away March 15, 2017.

He was born April 24, 1925 to Rev. Elijah and Lula Chapman in Winn. He was educated at Clarke County Training School. John was a member of the Berry’s Chapel AME Zion Church in Winn. He met and married Mildred Bumpers. Employed for many years at McCorquodale Sawmill and Fulton Lumber Company prior to his retirement. He was a veteran of the United States Army during the World War II period. In his spare time, he enjoyed fixing things, including cars, trucks, lawnmowers, clocks, radios, televisions and watches.

Left to forever cherish his memories, his devoted wife of 64 years, Mildred B. Chapman, Winn; three daughters, Jacqueline ( John) Jones, Madison, Betty Chapman, Winn, Phyllis Chapman, District Heights, Maryland; two grandchildren, Jumapili Salter and Jamila Jones, both of Madison; great-granddaughter, Jeneva Salter, Birmingham; sister, Hazel (Chester) Butler, Grove Hill; five sisters-in-law, Coma Lewis, Louise (Edward) Scott and Izola Porter, all of New Orleans, La., Mary Bumpers, Chicago, Ill. and Helen Chapman, Indianapolis, Iowa; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, were his siblings, Rosetta Bumpers, Verna Paige, Joseph Chapman, Irene Webb, Ulysses Chapman, Thelma Weeks, Velma Chapman, Leland Chapman, Walter Chapman and Jacob Chapman; and greatgrandson, John Christopher Slater.

The service was March 18 at Berry’s Chapel AME Zion Church, with Rev. Dr. E. Eugene Parker, pastor, as eulogist. Interment was in the Bumpers Family Cemetery in Winn.

Active pallbearers were Randall Bumpers, Donald Bumpers, Aaron Chapman, Henry Curtis Chapman, Charles Chapman, Jamie Lee Cunningham, James Russell and Kenny Coates.

Family and friends were the flower bearers.
