Roberts

Glover Fred (G.F.) Roberts, 89, died peacefully Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017 at Forest Manor Nursing Home in Tuscaloosa. He was born June 19, 1928.

In life, G.F. was a much beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. In death, he is remembered and honored by his family and friends as a strong, forthright and honest man who held as his important responsibility the love and care-taking of his family.

G.F. Roberts was born and raised in Coffeeville before becoming a long-time resident of Jackson where he was an employee of Boise Cascade. He served as both a millwright and a member of the maintenance department. He joined the Boise Cascade Retirement Group after retiring in 1994.

G.F. and Frances were members of the First United Methodist Church in Jackson.

A hard worker, Mr. Roberts first started working at 16 as a summer employee on an oil rig in Clarke County. His subsequent full-time employment included assignments on oil rigs in Texas and Louisiana with the State Survey Department and at Olin Chemical.

To all who knew and loved him, G.F. is also remembered as an avid gardener whose vegetables were always plentiful, a talent at repairing all sorts of items, small and large, a friendly neighbor who loved visiting his friends, a loyal and proud Alabama Crimson Tide Football Fan, a dedicated newspaper reader, and a tireless jokester.

Mr. Roberts instilled hi strong work ethic in his daughters, and he determined that he would provide them each with a college education despite the fact that he never had the chance to attend college himself.

His great laugh and broad smile that would light up the room will be remembered forever. He will be greatly missed by his loving family but knowing he is at peace in the arms of the Lord brings great comfort to their loss.

He leaves behind a loving family to celebrate his memory, including his daughters, Ramona Roberts (Mike) Rhodes, Birmingham, Brenda Roberts (Robbie) Chastain, Spanish Fort, Amanda Roberts (Steve) Wyatt, Tuscaloosa; his grandchildren, Heather Chapman (Eddie) Cowen, Avery Rhodes (Chris Akins); and his great-grandchildren, John Henry, Whit, Willa Rose, Hopper, Walton, Scarlet, and a host of extended family along with his Forest Manor family.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Frances Williamson Roberts; his first-born daughter, Elaine Roberts Chapman; his parents, Lee and Hester Roberts and his sister, Mary Ann Robert Parden.

Visitation will be Saturday, Dec. 9 at 1 p.m. at Lathan Funeral home in Jackson with a Celebration of Life to follow at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Jackson.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to First United Methodist Church of Jackson or Forest Manor Nursing Home in Tuscaloosa.

Active pallbearers were sons-in-law, Robbie Chastain, Mike Rhodes and Steve Wyatt and friends, Duke Coates, Eddie Pezent and Woodie Pugh.

Honorary pallbearers were Sonya Meyr, Wayne Lathan, the Boise Cascade Maintenance Crew circe 1980-90s and the staff of Forest Manor Nursing Home. A long-time friend, the Rev. Jessie Henry will provide an Honorary Reading.

Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson will direct.
