The Communities of Transformation site in Pine Hill is excited to announce its upcoming “Taste and See” event Thursday, Jan. 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the Pine Hill United Methodist Church. The purpose of the meeting is to answer questions about COT and invite others to join the discussion on ways to serve those without enough. Communities of Transformation is an innovative initiative that partner community volunteers with families seeking to build a better future. Through COT, intentional and unlikely friendships are developed bridging the socioeconomic, cultural and racial gaps that might often divide people. The ministry includes small groups of support, a community meal, child care for participants and goal setting and ongoing classes on topics like financial freedom and job readiness. A new 4-H Club, the Avian Bowl Club, is having an interest meeting at the Grove Hill Senior Center Thursday, Jan. 25 at 5:30 p.m. The club will learn facts about avian species – all things birds, including chickens, to compete in a bowl in Auburn on June 25. “Steamboats on Alabama Rivers,” will be the topic for the January meeting of the Clarke County Historical Society. Tom McGehee, a Mobile historian who is curator of the Bellingrath Gardens Home Museum in Mobile County will be the speaker. The meeting will be Sunday, Jan. 28 at 2:30 p.m. at Grove Hill Town Hall. The public is invited.

The Clarke County Cattleman’s Association will hold its annual meeting and steak dinner Saturday, Feb. 3 at 6:30 p.m. in the Clarke Prep School gym in Grove Hill. All members are urged to attend.

The Grove Hill Public Library will host columnist and novelist Sean Dietrich, known for his commentary on life in the American South Thursday, Feb. 8 at 6 p.m. His work has appeared in Southern Living, Good Grit, The Tallahassee Democrat, South Magazine, Yellowhammer News, the Bitter Southerner, Thom Magazine, The Mobile Press Register and he has authored seven books. A mediocre sailor and fisherman, a biscuit connoisseur, and barbecue competition judge, when he’s not writing, he spends much of his time aboard his fourteen-foot fishing boat (The S.S. Squirrel), along with his coonhound, Ellie Mae. The public is invited to attend.

The Clarke County Soil & Water Conservation District is now accepting applications for a $500 scholarship sponsored by the Alabama Conservation District Employees Association. An applicant must be a U.S. citizen, high school senior and living in the State of Alabama. Applications may be picked up at the District office located at 3100 Highway 43, Jackson, AL.
