Nineteen WHMS students were buzzing with nervous excitement recently at the annual Spelling Bee competition. For many weeks, these students studied and prepared for the big day.

Some students found the words “overwhelming” and had the “misfortune” of incorrectly “identifying” the spelling of their word. Others, however, quietly “celebrated” after they gave the “appropriate” word spelling.

With two remaining, Courtney Carter and Tierra Williams battled it out. Correctly spelling “righteous” and “goddess,” Courtney was pronounced the winner.

Courtney, a 7th grader, will compete at the County Spelling Bee February 3 at Grove Hill Town Hall. Tierra, who is in the 5th grade, will also attend the County Bee and will serve as WHMS Alternate.

The Spelling Bee was coordinated by Mrs. Gina Skipper.
