Several important dates were set during the Clarke County Board of Education meeting last Thursday afternoon, Feb. 24, in Grove Hill.

The graduation dates for the two high schools (Clarke County and Jackson) were announced by Superintendent Larry Bagley. “Friday, May 20 at 6 p.m. for Clarke County High,” he stated. “Then the next morning on May 21, at 9 a.m. for Jackson High School.”

Bagley also announced that summer school will run from May 31 until June 30; Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. until 12 noon.

“We still have details to work through with middle and high schools and hope to have those completed by the end of March as well.”

Bagley recognized the Jackson High School Lady Aggies women’s basketball team. “Congratulations for making it to the regional finals,” he said. “They came up a little short against Vigor but had a great season.” They lost 47-43 earlier in the day last Thursday.

Jackson Intermediate School’s Danny Norris was recognized as the Clarke County Teacher of the Year. “I have known Danny since he was a student of mine back at Wilson Hall [Middle School] where he was a great student,” Bagley said. “I am proud to say he is a product of our school system and we are proud to have him teaching our students in Jackson.”

Bagley informed the board that Schneider Engineers did a final walkthrough in preparation to begin work within the system’s schools.

“We met to establish a computer working area as well as a staging area for all of their equipment.”

Bagley also shared that February is Career and Technical Education Month. “We are proud to offer these opportunities to the students of Clarke County,” he said. “Students are able to learn skills and trades through hands-on training from instructors who have worked in their respective fields.”

The county system offers training in business management and administration, marketing, finance, early childhood education, industrial maintenance, health science, law enforcement and welding.

“Students are also given the opportunity to earn dual enrollment college credit with Coastal Alabama

Community College through these programs, at no cost to the student,” he said. “Upon completion of these dual enrollment programs, students may graduate from Coastal and high school at the same time, ready to enter the workforce or further their education.”

In personnel matters, the board approved the employment of Lauren Grantham, Wilson Hall English teacher; approved the resignation of Andrew Tranchina, JHS history teacher; and approved the transfer of Erica Porter, Federal Programs Bookkeeper to Central Office Bookkeeper.

The next meeting is scheduled for March 24 at 4 p.m.
