Christmas Eve 1913 fight, killing reported




Only 648 Clarke Countians had paid their poll taxes as of Dec. 31, 1913. Those who wanted to vote in the 1914 elections had to pay up by Feb. 1 or they would lose the right.

“In a difficulty at Pleasant Grove on Christmas day, Joe McIntyre cut Archie McIntyre so seriously that it was at first thought he would die from the wound, but later reports state that he will probably recover.” Joe’s story was that he was attacked by Archie, Babe McIntyre and Reuben Rotch and was forced to use his knife in self defense.

“Roscoe Spinks shot and killed Clyde Johnson, an employee of the Tyson Livery Stables, on the streets of Thomasville Christmas day. The two are reported to have quarreled on the night before, and when they met on the streets, the wrangle was renewed, whereupon Spinks pulled his gun and opened fire on Johnson, one ball taking effect in the neck and another just above the eye.”

“John Walker killed a hog recently two years old that dressed 314 pounds and from which he obtained 60 pounds of lard.”

Farmers Bank and Trust of Thomasville advertised assets of $580,666 including “cash in vault and banks” of $122,077.

The Bank of Grove Hill promoted an interest rate of 4 percent for saving accounts.

Rev. W. E. Fendley, a Clarke County native, who entered the ministry at Bassetts Creek Baptist Church, wrote of his present church assignment,the Forty First Ave. Baptist Church of Meridian, Miss. with a membership of over 500.
