Clarke County retired teachers install officers at May meeting




The Clarke County Education Retirees Association met Thursday, May 20 at 11:45 a.m., at David’s Catfish Restaurant in Thomasville.

The meeting was called to order by President Wilma Day who welcomed everyone. New members were given a special welcome. Mrs. Barbara Ford gave the invocation and led the Pledge of Allegiance. For the invocation, Mrs. Ford read from The Guidepost about a talented student who invested his time and talent unselfishly in another student. The theme was, “Use what God has given you to benefit someone else.” Henry Dunagan led prayer and blessed the food.

District 6 Director, Cleophas Stephens, attended this meeting. He expressed his joy of being with the Clarke County Education Retirees Association during its last meeting for the 2009-2010 year. He reminded the members of the new AERA President’s theme, “Recycle and Reuse Talents.” Also, he reminded CCERA members that the District 6 Annual Meeting would again be held at Alabama Southern Community College in Thomasville. This meeting will be July 21. Clarke County, as host, is asked to help provide refreshments and with serving of the refreshments. He encouraged members to attend the meeting and to help make District 6, although not the largest district, the largest in number in the State.

Stephens also reported on legislative affairs. He stated the largest concern is being cut in funds. PEEHIP is still among the best insurance programs. There will be insurance representatives available to answer questions and provide more information on insurance concerns during the July 21 District 6 meeting at Alabama Southern in Thomasville.

The Clarke County Education Retirees Association Annual was updated to reflect the new address for Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dunagan who had moved from Coffeeville to Jackson. Mrs. Lynda Malone’s telephone number was corrected.

Minutes of the March 20 meeting were read and approved. Mrs. Esmeraldo Smiley, treasurer, gave an annual financial report. She reported a total of 78 CCERA paid members for 2009-2010.

Mrs. Alberta Dixon, Community Service Chairperson, presented a facsimile check converting CCERA community service volunteer hours into cash. The value of the Check is $80,655.75. This is the monetary value of the community service reported by Clarke County Education Retirees members for the year 2009- 2010.

The Sunshine Committee reported the following as being ill or in bereavement.

Coffeeville: Passed away-Ms. Lummie Dunigan’s mother, Mrs. Luvern Kiel and Mrs. Charlotte Carr.

Grove Hill: Passed away- Ms. Jean Hinton’s mother.

Jackson: Mrs. Audrey Powell (ill), Mrs. Lillie Coats (father passed away), Mrs. Mae Ella Todd (ill), Mrs. Luvern Smith (husband).

Thomasville: Howard Jackson (ill), Mrs. Mirkerline Talley (ill), Mrs. C. Manzie (ill), and Mrs. Hildreth Clarke (ill).

The Clarke County Education Retirees Association again received a Unit of Excellence Award. This award was received by President Day during the annual AERA meeting, which was held in Montgomery on March 20.

Thomasville Mayor Sheldon Day, installed the 2010-2012 Clarke County Education Retirees Association Officers. The officers are: Mrs. Wilma Day, President, Mrs. Shirley Mc- Clurkin, First Vice President, Mrs. Esmeraldo Smiley, Second Vice President, Mrs. Willie Deloris Lanier, Secretary, Jimmy Newton, Treasurer, Mrs. Lynda Malone, Parliamentarian.

President Day informed the CCERA members that the “Feed Alabama” project was successful. She asked them to begin thinking of other volunteer projects to implement in addition to projects already selected for 2010- 2011.

Mr. Gunn announced the fruition of his dream, along with that of Mayor Day, to form a community band. The Community Band will perform a concert July 4 at 2 p.m. at the Civic Center in Thomasville.

Door prizes were awarded. Beautiful flowering plants were donated to all members attending the meeting. Larger flowering plants were donated as door prizes. Door prize winners were Mrs. Shirley McClurkin, Mrs. Willie Deloris Lanier, Mrs. Lynda Malone, Mrs. Kathleen Dunagan and Mrs. Esmeraldo Smiley.

All members were wished a safe and happy summer. The meeting was then adjourned by President Day.
