HIPPY/PAT Clarke County participated in the LENA program this summer.

LENA (Language Environment Analysis) is an interactive, feedback program that promotes communication between parents and children whose primary purpose is to increase language skills in children.

The parents participated in weekly group connections to discuss topics on language and how to integrate more language time in the home. In addition, book sharing was done weekly to encourage reading to the child.

One group session took place at the Thomasville Public Library and the other took place in one of the parent’s homes.

The focus of the program is not on parents talking with their child, a one-way conversation, but rather a two-way communication of serve and return with the child.

Children wore devices that recorded the interaction between the adult and child one day a week. Then feedback was given weekly so parents were able to gage how well they were doing with the techniques they were introduced to in the meetings.

Also, they were able to discuss with other parents how they were progressing and shared what was working for their child.

Their favorite topic was the stars they could earn and it became a friendly competition for them.

All of the parents were happy they participated and learned techniques to improve communication with their children in simple everyday ways.

“We would recommend this program to anyone who works with families and recognizes the importance of language skills for our children to be more successful in their future educational endeavors,” said Donna Nelson, HIPPY director.
