Commissioners attend to routine business matters at short meeting

It was a short and routine Clarke County Commission meeting Tuesday.

Commissioners approved a contract with Republic Services for solid waste collection. It goes into effect Nov. 1 for a three-year period.

Republic has the contract now and was the only company to submit a bid. It had indicated that it needed to raise rates prompting commissioners to seek bids. Rates are going up and will likely go up for customers but the county has not indicated how much.

Contracts were approved for debris removal and debris monitoring in cases of a hurricane or other natural disaster. Funds will be provided for the work if needed.

Bid packages will be sent out for auction proposals for county dump trucks and other equipment. The county tries to maintain a rotation of buying new dump trucks on a regular basis and selling the older ones at auction.

Approval was given to open and fill a Mapper 1 position and an Appraiser II position in the Mapping and Appraisal Department.

EMA Director Roy Waite said it appeared that Hurricane Michael was headed east, to the far Panhandle of Florida or the Big Bend area, and would not be a threat to the county.

Sympathy was expressed for County Administrator Rick Harvey whose mother died unexpectedly Oct. 6. Funeral services for Mary Eloyce Mosley, 75, were held in Quitman, Miss. Tuesday.

Commissioner Tyrone Moye was absent from Tuesday’s meeting.
